Here are the 10 Steps involved in getting the countertops of your dreams! Absolute Stone Design USA is a full-service company, which means that we are not only the owners of the company, we fabricate and install the stone ourselves. There are no sub-contractors involved, which gives you peace of mind that we’ll be there for you every step of the process.
We try our best to give you an accurate estimate of the completion of your order. Sometimes the availability of the slabs will impact this date — backorders do happen! But we will keep you in the loop about any changes to your project’s completion and will work with you to stay on your schedule as much as possible.
2. Selecting your Stone:
There are hundreds of choices for your countertops. Feel free to browse the internet for ideas before you come to visit our showroom. We have many beautiful slabs on site, and we are happy to order stone or engineered stone if we don’t have quite what you’re looking for. Approving your final slab is extremely important, particularly with natural stone such as granite and marble. Because of the uniqueness of natural stone, what you select in a catalog may vary from the actual slab. Absolute Stone Design USA will store your slabs until installation.
Until we create a template, price estimates cannot be “set in stone.” There are usually some variance between a homeowner’s measurements and what we uncover during the templating process (odd angles, overhangs, etc). That’s why you need a professional!
4. Creating a Template:
If you are doing a complete kitchen or bath overhaul, it is important that all new appliances and other features are on sight before Absolute Stone Design USA can measure for your new countertops. These items include oven, stove, cook top, down draft, dishwasher, sink, faucet, even soap dispensers. Cutting granite is both a science and an art, and the last thing you want is a mistake in a very expensive piece of stone! Please make sure these items are in place before we come — Absolute Stone Design USA is not responsible for any damages to appliances that need to be moved in order to create an accurate template. Also, we request that the homeowner or a designated person stay on site during the template process. Important questions come up about corners, overhangs, seams and unexpected design challenges.
5. Demolition/Removal of Old Countertops:
Absolute Stone Design USA does not remove or demolish old countertops unless arrangements have been made in advance. There is an extra charge for this service, so please let us know you require removal/demolition before the estimate is created.
The homeowner or designee must be present during the entire installation process. If it’s a renovation, please bear in mind that the new countertop will probably not have the same footprint as the old countertop. Expect areas to be exposed or concealed by the new countertop. For this reason, it’s a good idea to wait on features such as back splashes and trim until the new countertop is in. We also strongly recommend that the homeowner hold off on final wall preparation (painting, wallpaper, etc) until installation is complete. We are extremely careful, but minor scrapes and dings do happen when you’re dealing with extremely heavy and unwieldy countertops. Incidental damages are the responsibility of the homeowner to repair.
7. Plumbing and Wiring:
We are not plumbers or electricians by trade. We cannot disconnect your sink when removing old tops and we’re not responsible for any leaks or damage. We also do not reconnect sinks or cook tops. We will, however, install your new sink in the countertop so it’s ready for reconnection.
Placement of seams is not an exact science, unfortunately. Seams will typically vary from 1/16” to 1/8” and may be visible to the eye or touch. Color coordinated epoxy will be used to form the seam and blend in with countertop. Even though a customer is consulted with respect to the seam location, Absolute Stone Design USA reserves the right to adjust if needed.
9. Installation Approval:
After the product has been installed the homeowner or designee must be present to inspect the countertop and confirm that they are satisfied with the quality, fit and damage-free condition of the countertop.
Much like any construction project, there will be some dust associated with installation. The homeowner may want to cover nearby doors to limit the spread. After installation, we will return the area to the best possible shape we can — we care about our job sites as much as you do!
Absolute Stone Design USA offers a 5 year warranty on the fabrication and installation of your countertop. However, we do not cover damages caused by dropping something on the counter, scratching the counter, etc.
